The TIRR Memorial Hermann Urodynamics Program works to restore and maintain urinary function to improve the quality of life for patients. Highly trained urology specialists are committed to seeing the potential in every person they work with and developing that potential to the fullest through customized treatment planning. The affiliated urologists and specialized registered nurses in urology are experienced in handling patients with neurogenic bladder and autonomic dysreflexia. The urologists also serve the Houston urology community as a resource for the area’s most complex patients.

Urodynamics refers to a series of diagnostic tests used to evaluate urinating disorders. These tests are performed on the bladder, urethra and urinary sphincters. The results of these tests help the patient’s physician understand the cause of the problem, where it is located and how it can best be managed.

Problems with Urination Can Be Due To

• Disease or injury of the nervous system (brain injury, stroke, tumors, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, diabetes and congenital disorders)
• Poor muscle function (bladder muscle, sphincter muscles and other muscles around the urethra)
• Obstruction of the urethra (prostate gland enlargement, stricture of the urethra)
• Side effects of medication

• Urologic Electromyography - The sphincter electromyogram is performed to show how well the sphincter (outlet) muscles are functioning and if they are working in coordination with the bladder.
• Complex Video Urodynamic Study - This exam is performed with X-rays and allows the physician to monitor and determine how the bladder and urethral sphincter function together.
• Voiding Flow Rate - A voiding study helps determine how the bladder and sphincter behave while storing urine and passing urine. This test is done for people with urinary incontinence, people who have difficulty with urination, and people with neurologic diseases that can affect bladder function. This test will measure bladder capacity and pressure and identify problems such as a small-capacity bladder, overactive bladder or high-pressure bladder.
• Neurotoxin injections for treatment of neurogenic bladder
• Urogynecology evaluation and treatment of voiding dysfunction, urinary/stress incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse.
• Intermittent Catheterization Training
• EMG/fluoroscopy to assist with procedures
• General Urology Education including self-catheterization
