Mark Sherer Honored with Leonard Diller Award

Mark Sherer, PhD, ABPP, FACRM, senior scientist and director of research at TIRR Memorial Hermann, has been selected as the recipient of the Leonard Diller Award, which acknowledges excellence in the field of brain injury and neurorehabilitation.

The award was presented by the American Psychological Association’s Division of Rehabilitation Psychology at its 16th annual conference held in February in San Antonio. Dr. Sherer was the keynote speaker and discussed factors that predict community integration outcomes for persons with traumatic brain injury.

A clinical professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Baylor College of Medicine and UTHealth Medical School in Houston, Dr. Sherer is a board-certified neuropsychologist with 30 years of experience as a clinician, investigator, administrator and educator in brain injury rehabilitation. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the National Academy of Neuropsychology and the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr. Sherer has served as principal investigator for grants on TBI recovery, impaired self-awareness, post-traumatic confusional state, telephone counseling for persons with TBI, pharmacologic intervention for post-TBI irritability, TBI community integration and rehabilitation of brain tumor patients.

He currently serves as principal investigator for the Texas TBI Model System at TIRR Memorial Hermann. He has published more than 110 peer-reviewed articles and 13 book chapters, and given numerous presentations to state, national and international conferences. He is section editor of Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and also serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation and Rehabilitation Psychology.

Monique R. Pappadis, CHES, CCRP, was awarded the TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation Innovation Competition Staff Award. The $10,000 award will fund her project, “Perception of Resource Availability and Accessibility in Spanish-speaking Persons with TBI and Their Caregivers.”

Cindy B. Ivanhoe, MD, is an invited contributing author of the Brain Injury Medicine Subspecialty Exam Prep, published and endorsed by the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She developed “Moderate to Severe Brain Injury” as part of an audio and slide review course composed of six case study presentations.

On the Move

At the 25th Annual Meeting of the American Neuropsychiatric Association, held in February 2014 in Seattle, David B. Arciniegas, MD, completed his three-year term as program chair. He continues his work with the association as co-chair of the Trainee Task Force. In addition, he completed his two-year term as president of the International Brain Injury Association (IBIA) at the Tenth World Congress on Brain Injury in San Francisco, held in March 2014. At the congress, he was elected to serve a four-year term as chair of the IBIA. In January, he was appointed deputy editor of the Journal of Neuropsychiatry & Clinical Neurosciences, published by American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc.
