What Are Cardiac Tumors?

Tumors of the heart are a very rare diagnosis, especially in children. When they do occur, they can be all shapes and sizes. Tumors can develop on the outside or inside of the heart. Tumors from other sites in the body that also develop in or around the heart are more common than primary heart tumors.

Most cardiac tumors are found incidentally. If there are symptoms, the symptoms associated with cardiac tumors are related to their size and location.

How Are Cardiac Tumors Diagnosed?

Your child’s physicians may ask for your child to have multiple tests done to investigate the tumor. These tests could include:

  • Echocardiogram
  • Magnetic resonance imaging
  • Computed tomography
  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Electrophysiological tests

How We Treat Cardiac Tumors

The treatment of cardiac tumors depends on the size, location, and symptoms related to the cardiac tumor. There are many tumors that are best to observe and some tumors that require surgical resection. The treatment is individualized to each patient, with the input and full involvement of the child and parents.

The Children’s Heart Institute at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital has vast experience treating children from across the world who have cardiac tumors.
