The mission of this sub-center will be to critically analyze various multi-disciplinary treatments in the field of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as provided in our newly organized Gastrointestinal Center of Excellence/Texas Liver Center at the Ertan Digestive Disease Center, along with evaluation of their outcomes within the broader scope of health care.

We have assembled an outstanding multi-disciplinary group of physicians who will work in a collaborative integrated fashion to provide state-of-the-art care in Gastroenterology and Hepatology with special emphasis on certain diseases.

This comprehensive integrated approach will allow us to distinguish ourselves from other center in the Texas Medical Center as it will not only provide the best medical processes but will also allow us to measure quality of the care provided. By integrating the outstanding clinical strength of this multi-disciplinary team at the GI Center of Excellence/Texas Liver Center with the methodological experts drawn from the faculty at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School and UT School of Public Health at Houston, this Sub-Center will also collaborate with various other Centers in this GI Center of Excellence/Texas Liver Center at the Ertan Digestive Disease Center to provide clinical and translational research assistance for specialty projects in certain conditions.

Our Goal

Our goal is to initiate, develop, and perform clinically relevant studies on important Gastroenterology and Hepatology issues, including improving the quality, appropriateness, and safety in GI procedures; eliminating disparities in our clinical care; performing cost-effectiveness analyses and workforce projections to optimize care, evaluating of patient reported outcomes, and improving our overall Gastroenterology and Hepatology knowledge base with population-based clinical epidemiological studies.

As part of quality measure, we will align ourselves with national consortium including GI Quality Initiative Consortium- a non-profit collaboration of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, which is a quality benchmarking registry that is raising the bar on efficiency, effectiveness, and reliability. This Center also has access to various national databases and will be able to compare our performance measure and quality outcomes with national standards. This data will be extremely valuable in further expanding our patient referral-base locally, nationally, and internationally.

In addition, we will start a structured program to train interested national and international physicians in outcomes and policy-relevant research specifically targeting the evaluation and improvement of Gastroenterology and Hepatology care and outcomes.
