HOUSTON (March 24, 2016)

TIRR Sleep roomTIRR Memorial Hermann Neurological Sleep Medicine Center recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

The TIRR Memorial Hermann Neurological Sleep Medicine Center specializes in sleep disorders after traumatic brain injury, stroke and other neurological illnesses. Sleep disorders are common after a traumatic brain injury, stroke or other neurological illnesses, and can deter full participation in a rehabilitation program.

“This accreditation endorses our level of care as being on par with national standards,” says Dr. Sudha Tallavajhula, medical director, TIRR Memorial Hermann Neurological Sleep Medicine Center. “Our program was created with the unique intent of addressing sleep problems in patients with complicated neurological conditions. Our facilities, technicians and physician all have the ability to study patients with impaired mobility resulting from diverse causes as well as provide comprehensive electroencephalogram along with polysomnography.”

To receive accreditation for a five-year period, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. These standards address core areas such as personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care, and quality assurance. Additionally, the sleep center’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.

“The American Academy of Sleep Medicine congratulates TIRR Memorial Hermann Neurological Sleep Disorder Center on meeting the high standards required for receiving accreditation as a sleep disorders center,” said Dr. Nathaniel Watson, president, AASM. “TIRR Memorial Hermann Neurological Sleep Disorder Center is an important resource to the local medical community and will provide academic and scientific value in addition to the highest quality care for patients suffering from sleep disorders.”
