HOUSTON (October 05, 2023)

In line with new guidance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Memorial Hermann is pleased to offer the new Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at Memorial Hermann Medical Group (MHMG) clinics, by appointment only, effective today.

The updated vaccine is available to established MHMG patients, ages 6 months and older. MHMG practices are accepting new patients. The vaccines also are available at most pharmacies.

The new vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna target the XBB.1.5 subvariant of omicron, the strain of COVID-19 that is currently circulating throughout the Greater Houston area. More than 90% of the COVID-19 viruses circulating now are closely related to that strain. The previous bivalent Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines target older strains of the virus and are no longer authorized for use in the United States.

In addition to the vaccine, the CDC says at-home tests are effective at determining if you have COVID-19 and can help you protect your family, friends and co-workers. If you do contract the virus, check with your primary care physician about treatments that can reduce severe illness and help you avoid hospitalization.
