Since opening in 1985, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands has continuously grown to meet the needs of the community. Once a 42-bed hospital with 200 employees, known then as The Woodlands Community Hospital, it now operates with 294 beds and 1,900 employees, making Memorial Hermann The Woodlands the largest healthcare employer in Montgomery County.

Recalling the early years, Les Brown, an engineering services manager and 30-year veteran of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands, is amazed by the growth he’s seen over the last three decades. “I remember a night soon after we opened when four patients showed up in our emergency room all at once. It quickly became an all-hands-on-deck situation, yet today our hospital’s emergency rooms see nearly 150 patients in a day.”
The hospital services 67 specialties including an accredited Chest Pain Center network featuring open-heart surgery, complex arrhythmia services and cardiac rehabilitation. The comprehensive team at Memorial Hermann Mischer Neuroscience Associates treats conditions of the brain, spine and central nervous system, and is staffed with affiliated neurosurgeons, neurologists and a neurological oncologist.
Additional campus features include a family birth center, a lactation center, a breast care center that recently announced a partnership with MD Anderson, orthopedics/sports medicine services, a cancer center, surgical services including the largest-volume robotic-assisted surgery program in the area, two emergency centers, Level III trauma center (to be operating as Level II later this year), diabetes management, along with physical, occupational and speech therapy.
“The vision 30 years ago was to bring neighborhood access to high-quality healthcare and that remains our priority today,” Urban said. “We are continuously advancing our offerings, specialties and technology to provide the very best in health care closer to home.”
The most recent specialty additions include the Joint Center inpatient unit for knee and hip replacements, TIRR Memorial Hermann-The Woodlands for inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation and expanded pediatrics services which includes a Level III neonatal intensive care unit.
“In 1985, the labor and delivery department of the hospital delivered 195 babies, said Mary Hersey, RNC, BSN, Director of Women’s and Newborn Services. “Today we are delivering more than 4,000 babies a year, offering moms close-to-home maternal care both pre- and post-delivery.”
Memorial Hermann The Woodlands also supports the local community through free health screenings, community education programs and financially supports grassroots efforts among local schools and community groups. Furthermore, the hospital contributes roughly $10 million in services and financial support to the community and helps care for the area’s underserved residents by providing in-kind medical, diagnostic and laboratory services.
