The reunion celebrates life and provides families the opportunity to visit with the physicians, nurses and staff that cared for them during their time at the hospital. Dozens of families returned for the celebration including one-year-old Lucy Garza who spent her first days in the NICU at Memorial Hermann Southeast.
“We spent some critical days here in the NICU and today is a very happy day for us,” says Jorge Garza, Lucy’s father. “We wanted to come back and just say ‘thank you’ to everyone.”
The event is every bit as special for the NICU team. “When we see these little ones and their families for the first time it’s often a very stressful and sometimes, critical time,” says Annabelle Encarnacion, RN, BSN, Memorial Hermann Southeast NICU. “We develop such a close bond with our babies and their families while they are here with us. It’s wonderful when they come back and we see how well they’re growing and thriving.”
The Level III NICU at Memorial Hermann Southeast is capable of caring for the smallest and sickest of newborn babies. Neonatologists, neonatal nurses and respiratory therapists combine with advanced technology to provide specialized care for newborns needing intensive medical attention.
