Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, is one of only 13 academic medical centers in the country to receive the Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award by the University Health System Consortium (UHC). The award is given to member institutions that demonstrate superior performance as measured by the UHC Quality and Accountability Study. This is the hospital’s second time to receive this prestigious award.

In 2013, TIRR Memorial Hermann was recognized by the ANCC with the Pathway to Excellence designation - the precursor for Magnet® status. A Pathway to Excellence hospital is a champion of high quality nursing practice. TIRR Memorial Hermann’s Pathway to Excellence is a journey of accomplishments in quality, patient safety, patient satisfaction, operational excellence, nurse recruitment and retention, and individual achievements. For example, between 2007 and 2016 the proportion of Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurses (CRRNs) increased from 45% to 66%. In 2015, TIRR Memorial Hermann was re-designated. This attests to the RN’s staff commitment to excellence and personal goal achievement.

Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute - Southwest and Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute- Memorial City earned a Three-Star Rating from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for quality related to coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The STS composite quality rating is based on a combination of 11 National Quality Forum-endorsed heart bypass surgery processes and outcomes measures. These measures rate the performance of heart surgery programs in four areas: Avoidance of Operative Mortality; Avoidance of Major Morbidity; High Quality Intra-Operative Care; and Appropriate Perioperative Medication Usage.

Memorial Hermann was named one of the Top 5 Large Health Systems in the nation in 2012 and 2013 according to the 15 Top Health Systems study by Truven Health (formerly Thomson Reuters), a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of health care. Memorial Hermann was the only hospital system in Houston and one of only two in Texas named among the nation’s top 15 health systems. The prominent award is based on criteria such as clinical outcomes, patient safety, patient satisfaction and operational efficiency.

Memorial Hermann was named a finalist of the 2013 Foster G. McGaw Prize for Excellence in Community Service, one of the most esteemed community service honors in health care. The Foster G. McGaw Prize is sponsored by The Baxter International Foundation and the American Hospital Association (AHA) and Health Research & Educational Trust. Memorial Hermann was recognized for its innovative community health initiatives, including Health Centers for Schools, Mobile Dental Clinic, ER Navigation, Psych Response Team and Interfaith Community Clinic.

Memorial Hermann was awarded the 2012 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award. Presented by the National Quality Forum (NQF) and The Joint Commission, the award recognizes us as a leader in delivering safe, effective health care with a patient-centered focus. Memorial Hermann is the first health system in Texas to earn this distinction. We salute our employees and affiliated physicians who have made this achievement possible through their attention to high-reliability behaviors, evidence-based care and harm prevention. We are proud of the effect our patient safety and quality successes are having on raising the standard of care across our system and across the nation.

Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center received recognition for excellence in heart attack care/reducing readmissions from the Commonwealth Fund.

Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, formerly Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital, has received full accreditation with PCI from the Society of Chest Pain Centers, a patient-centered, nonprofit international organization focused on improving care for patients with heart disease. SCPC's goal is to significantly reduce the mortality rate of these patients by teaching the public to recognize and react to the early symptoms of a possible heart attack, reduce the time that it takes to receive treatment, and increase the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment. The Accredited Chest Pain Center's protocol-driven and systematic approach to patient management allows physicians to reduce time to treatment during the critical early stages of a heart attack, when treatments are most effective, and to better monitor patients when it is not clear whether or not they are having a coronary event. Such observation helps ensure that patients are neither sent home too early nor needlessly admitted.

Memorial Hermann Care Management received the Franklin Award of Distinction, recognizing standardized approach to Systemwide care management, granted by The Joint Commission and the American Care Management Association.

Memorial Hermann Health System's Care Management Services program provides a standardized approach to case management for a seven-hospital system. The system was chosen based upon their program structure and systematic approach to case management across the entire system. The model provides for common policies and procedures, electronic case management tools, and a collaborative practice approach which includes nurses, social workers, physicians, patients, caregivers and the community.

The award is named for Benjamin Franklin, the co-founder of the first organized hospital in the United States. His personal character, integrity and credibility, as well as his reputation as an entrepreneur and inventor, represent the type of leadership and forward thinking that distinguish the hospitals or health systems recognized as Franklin Award recipients.

Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center received the Midas+ Platinum Quality Award for excellence in clinical outcomes.

The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer granted three-year approval with commendation to the Community Hospital Cancer Programs at Memorial Hermann Memorial City, Memorial Hermann Greater Heights and Memorial Hermann Southeast. This distinction is held by seven Memorial Hermann Cancer Centers, including the above facilities plus Memorial Hermann Northeast, Memorial Hermann Southwest, Memorial Hermann-TMC and Memorial Hermann The Woodlands. It is achieved by only 25% of cancer centers nationwide.

Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital and Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center earned recognition for success in improving care for heart disease and stroke patients using the American Heart Association's "Get with the Guidelines" program as Gold and Gold Plus facilities, respectively.

Memorial Hermann -Texas Medical Center, Memorial Hermann Memorial City, Memorial Hermann Southwest, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands and Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital received the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission as Primary Stroke Centers.

Quality Respiratory Care Recognition from the Association of Respiratory Care was awarded to TIRR Memorial Hermann and Memorial Hermann-TMC.

Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital, Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital, Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital and Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center have received the Hospital Quality Improvement Gold Award from TMF^® Health Quality Institute, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Texas. TMF established the awards program in partnership with The Texas Hospital Association, Texas Medical Association, Texas Organization of Rural & Community Hospitals and Texas Osteopathic Medical Association. The system's remaining five acute care hospitals received Silver Awards.

Memorial Hermann received the Texas Hospital Association 2011 Bill Aston Award for Quality. Established in 2010, the THA award recognizes measurable success in improving quality and patient outcomes through the sustained implementation of a national and/or state evidence-based patient care initiative. The recognition comes thanks to the hard work and dedication of employees and affiliated physicians, in a commitment to reduce the incidence of health care associated infections.

Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) gave its Five-Star Award for exemplary work in caring for newborns and their families to: Memorial Hermann Katy, Memorial Hermann Southeast, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land and Memorial Hermann The Woodlands.

Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital was designated a Texas Ten-Step facility by the Texas Hospital Association and the TDSHS, recognizing its exceptional care for mothers and newborns.

TDSHS designated Memorial Hermann Katy, Memorial Hermann Southwest, Memorial Hermann Memorial City, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands and Memorial Hermann-TMC as primary stroke centers. This designation recognizes the fastest, most appropriate stroke care and is achieved by fewer than 30 Texas facilities.
